Chapter 22
Since when does Brody know what a vacuum cleaner is? ~ Message from Elder to the Bragg brothers
My body aches as I walk home after yet another day of working at the community center. Donât get me wrong. Iâm glad I have some equipment there so I can continue to work, but the kiln at the center is small. Itâs going to take me months to catch up with the outstanding orders I have. Orders Iâve already been paid for.
And thereâs no new money coming in until I catch up. Except for one buyer who is apparently willing to wait several months for her pottery. Sheâs been buying a piece every single day since the fire. Iâve made a few of them but most of them are at the bottom of my very long to-do list.
I hear a buzz coming from inside my house as I climb the stairs. I groan. Great. Brody the prankster is up to no good. Again. So much for a relaxing evening with a glass of wine.
I stomp into my house, ready to lay into Brody, but freeze when it becomes clear what the noise is.
âWhat are you doing?â
Brody glances up from the vacuum cleaner and smiles at me. He speaks but I canât hear him over the vacuum.
âWhat?â I shout.
He switches off the vacuum. âWelcome home, Soleil.â
âWhat did you break?â
His forehead wrinkles. âWhat did I break?â
âYou must have broken something. Why else are you cleaning?â
âIâm cleaning because you donât have time to.â
I narrow my eyes at him. âYou didnât break anything?â
âNope. Now, have you eaten?â
âHave I eaten? Did you seriously ask if Iâve eaten?â
He checks his watch. âItâs after seven. Did you get something to eat with Moon at the diner before you came home?â
âDid I eat at the diner?â
âLet me put this away and then Iâll heat up some food for you.â
âHeat up some food for me?â
Why am I repeating everything he says? Probably because nothing heâs saying makes sense. Heâs going to feed me?
âDonât look so surprised. Do you think the food fairies have been leaving you food in the refrigerator for the past week?â
I shrug. âI assumed you bought the food from the diner.â
âDid you notice any take-out bags?â
I roll my eyes. âThis is Winter Falls. There are no take-out bags. If you want to buy food to bring home, you need to bring your own dishes.â
âI havenât been buying food from the diner. Iâve been cooking.â
âYouâve been cooking?â
âYes.â He smiles. âAnd youâve been eating the food I made. Unless you threw it away.â
I wag my finger at him. âYou donât throw food away in Winter Falls.â
His nose scrunches. âI donât know. I threw away the first batch of chocolate chip cookies I made when they burnt to a crisp.â
âThey still should have gone on the compost pile.â
He nods. âLesson learned. No throwing food away. Even when you have to douse it with water to prevent a fire.â
I groan. âIâm glad I wasnât here.â
âI promise there wasnât a fire. And the next batch was way better.
